Course Learning Objectives/Outcomes

By the end of the course, the Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Social Worker or Psychologist will be able to:

§1810. (a) The instruction and training in alcoholism and other chemical substance dependency required by Sections 4980.41, 4980.80, 4980.90, 4996.2, 4996.17, and 4999.32 of the Code shall consist of not less than fifteen hours of classroom training or coursework and shall include each of the following areas:
     (1) The definition of alcoholism and other chemical dependency, and the evaluation of the           abuser.

-Explain Chemical Dependency.
-Name the six widely used structured assessment instruments.

     (2) Recognizing the symptoms of alcoholism and drug addiction.
-Name the nine Warning Signs of Drugs and Alcohol Influence.

     (3) Major treatment approaches to alcoholism and chemical dependency.
-Explain why is Drug Addiction not simple to treat.

     (4) Making appropriate interpretations, interventions, and referrals.
-Explain who can conduct a brief intervention.

     (5) The process of referring affected persons.
-When in doubt, providers should refer persons for a full evaluation by a multidisciplinary team with experience in evaluating prenatal alcohol exposure. Name the two circumstances should prompt a diagnostic referral.

     (6) The role of persons and systems that support or compound the abuse.
-Name the two definitions of Health Care System according to the World Health Organization.

     (7) Recognizing and intervening with affected family members.
-Name three steps are required for the "Build Up Your Courage Muscles" exercise.

     (8) Extent of the alcohol and drug abuse epidemic and its effects on the individual, family,           and community.
-Explain what are some specific steps that social workers can take to be helpful when a SUD is suspected or identified.

     (9) Community resources offering assessment, treatment and follow-up for the abuser and           family.
-Name the two important factors to consider when examining patterns of behavioral health.
-Name the second-most abused category of drugs, after marijuana.
-Explain the mission of the National Implementation Research Network (NIRN).
-Explain what do the Families Anonymous Meetings provide.

     (10) Current theories of the etiology of substance abuse.
-Research suggests that some of the population is genetically predisposed to become chemically dependant. Explain what does the Studies indicate that people identified as being chemically dependent.

     (11) Knowledge of certain populations at risk with regard to substance abuse.
-Explain some associated risks of substance abuse among gay, lesbian, and bisexual questioning adolescents.
-Name two social environment risk factors addressed in Werch’s intervention.
-Explain the focus of homework assignments in Stein’s relapse prevention strategy.
-Name four high-risk behaviors and activities that cause 25% to 50% of all children in the United States aged 10-17 to be at risk for curtailed educational, emotional, economic, and social opportunities.
-The reluctancy to accept the idea that Indian culture and spirituality may be important to the prevention and treatment of alcohol problems can be explained by naming two reasons.

     (12) Historical and contemporary perspectives on alcohol and other drug abuse.
-The personal characteristics of those particularly liable to use drugs have been obtained by comparing using with nonusing adolescents in the same schools. Name the one of the characteristics looked at from time to time.

     (13) Medical aspects of alcoholism and other chemical dependency.
-Many medications can interact with alcohol, thereby altering the metabolism or effects of alcohol and/or the medication. Some of these interactions can occur even at moderate drinking levels and result in adverse health effects for the drinker. Name the two types of alcohol medication interactions exist.

     (14) Legal aspects of substance abuse.
-Alcohol and drug counselors providing vocational rehabilitation (VR) services directly or through referral need to be aware of legal and ethical issues in naming three areas.

     (15) Education concerning and prevention of substance abuse.
-Name the five main categories of comorbidity can be identified, although for some patients it might not be clear which category they belong to.

     (16) Learning about current programs of recovery, such as 12 step programs, and how             therapists can effectively utilize these programs.
-Name the First Three Steps to five AA or NA Steps that patients complete during their treatment.
-Explain what is often a goal of substance abuse treatment.
